Agnes R. Hume Johnsen, 95, of 216 Honeyman Avenue Middletown, formerly of 39 Holland Street Newport, died Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.She was the wife of the late Einar L. Johnsen. Born in North Castle, NY on July 12, 1907, she was the daughter of the late James and Anne Martland Hume.Mrs. Johnsen worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York and came to Newport in 1929 when she got married. During World War II she volunteered with the American Red Cross. After the war she became a nurse at the Newport Hospital where she worked for 27 years. Mrs. Johnsen was a member of Emmanuel Church where she was head of the church Sunday school for 35 years and had volunteered for many things over the years including working in the church office. As a young women she played tennis and was a high diver both in New York and Newport. She loved her flower garden and back yard as well as Gooseberry Beach. She is survived by her son James R. Johnsen of Newport, RI, four daughters Roberta Franklin of Newport, RI, Irene Sloane of Framingham, MA, Carole Poitras of Inverness, FL, and Jacqueline Breen of Middletown, RI, her sister Anne Kenney of Washington, DC, seventeen grandchildren, twenty eight great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.She was the mother of the late William E. Johnsen and the sister of the late Kenneth Hume, Robert Hume, William Hume and Adelaide Hathaway. Her funeral will be on held Saturday, August 31, 2002, at 11:00 AM in Emmanuel Church, 42 Dearborn Street, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
