Alan P. Clark ("Porky"), 95, of Middletown, Rhode Island passed away peacefully on December 4, 2024, with his family by his side. Born in New York City, Alan spent his childhood in River Edge, New Jersey. He graduated from Princeton University where he enjoyed an accomplished football career and earned his master's degree at Teacher's College - Columbia University. He began his career in education in New England at several Preparatory schools but soon returned to the New Jersey public school system. It was at this time that he met and married the love of his life, Shirley Crosby, and they began their journey together in Parsippany, New Jersey. He later moved on to faculty member and coaching positions at the St. Mark's School in Southborough Massachusetts, and the St. George's School in Newport Rhode Island.
Porky lived his life with the deepest humility and integrity. Over his five-decade career he focused on motivating and inspiring growth through every lesson he taught, every practice on the field, and every game he coached. He instilled the values of teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and respect. Principles he embodied in both his personal and professional lives. His legacy will be defined by the countless friendships that were born from his commitment to the standards he set for himself in the hope of making a lasting impact on every aspect of a student's life.
Porky: Daddy: Dad: Pop: Papa will be most remembered as a devoted husband, cherished father, beloved grandfather and great grandfather, who mentored the values of family loyalty, hard work, and resilience. His keen sense of humor filled the home with joy and laughter. He enjoyed working on the family summer home and had a great passion for model railroading that gave rise to many elaborate model train layouts. He was an avid reader of just about anything, especially history and had a knowledge of Abraham Lincoln's Civil War era that could match any scholar.
Alan was preceded in death by his mother Vera (Prentice), his father Alexander Clark, and his sister Nancy (Kogen). Also preceding him in death was his wife of 47 years, Shirley. Alan is survived by his four beloved children: Linda Hammons (Spencer), Ladd (Jamie Whitenight), Laura (Michael DeFarias), and Scot (Meredith), as well as seven grandchildren (Tess, Sara-Ladd, Sanders, and Danny; Althea, Ian, and Grayson) and one great-grandchild (Roan). He leaves behind the gifts of love, wisdom, and the treasured memories that will forever resonate in the hearts of his family and friends.
