Albert D. Saunders, Jr

Albert D. Saunders, Jr., 78, of Portsmouth, RI, passed away on March 7, 2012 at home.He was the husband to Valerie J. Evans Saunders for 53 years.Born in Providence, RI on December 3, 1933, he was the son of the late Albert D. and Viola Freeman Saunders.Mr. Saunders was educated in the East Providence Public School System and attended Brown University. He was a 1956 graduate of the University of Rhode Island where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree and also Georgetown University where he received his Bachelor of Law Degree L.L.B.. Al served as a Lieutenant in the US Army Infantry in Forty Benning, GA and in Korea from 1957-1958. He was admitted to the Virginia Bar Association in 1964, the Connecticut Bar Association in 1964 and the Rhode Island Bar Association in 1965. He practiced law privately in New Haven, CT from 1964-1965, in Providence, RI from 1965-1974, in East Greenwich, RI from 1974-1997, in Warwick, RI from 1997-2008 and in North Kingstown, RI from 2008 until his death. While a student at the University of Rhode Island, he was President of the Phi Mu Delta Fraternity. He was an East Greenwich Delegate to the 1973 RI Constitutional Convention; he served on the East Greenwich Town Council from 1974-1978 as President from 1974-1976; he was President of the University of RI Alumni Association from 1979-1980; he was the recipient of the URI Ram Award in 1981; he was a member of the Executive Committee from 1980-1988 and Trustee of the University of Rhode Island Foundation; and a long-time member of the East Greenwich Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow.Al enjoyed all outdoor activities, reading and traveling the world with his wife, Val.In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Nancy V.
