Albert E. Honnen, Sr., 87, of Water Street, Portsmouth, RI, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2011 in Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary Margaret Peggy York Honnen.Born in Newport, on July 24, 1923, he was the son of the late Albert and Julia Weaver Honnen III.Mr. Honnen graduated in 1941 from Rogers High School where he was a competitive athlete in football, basketball, track and baseball. He served in the Army during WWII and then in the Marines during the Korean War. Mr. Honnen went on to work for the Providence Gas Company for 46 years retiring as a Heating Supervisor in 1991. Mr. Honnen was proud of his Irish heritage and traveled many times to Ireland to trace his familys history. Al maintained both Irish and American citizenship. He was a life member of the Portsmouth Knights of Columbus, a life member of the Seaconnet Sportsman Club, and a founding member of the Greenbridge Sportsman Association. Mr. Honnen was on the board of the Portsmouth Historical Society as well as a member of the Redwood Library and the U.S. Marine Corps League. Al was a volunteer at the Newport Hospital and was a recipient of their Shining Star Award, in recognition of over 5700 hours of volunteer service.He leaves his children Albert E. Honnen Jr. and Joanne Honnen, both of Portsmouth, RI, and two grandchildren Geoffrey Corey Honnen and Albert Jason Honnen.Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Monday, March 14 at 8:30 - 9:30am in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.His funeral will be held on Monday, March 14, 2011 at 10:00am in St. Anthonys Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
