NEWPORT, RI ? Albert ?Al? P. Gaines, Jr., 83, of 3 Doris Terrace, Newport, RI, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Bernice Tutt Gaines. Born in Newport, RI on August 23, 1921, he was the son of the late Albert P. and Pauline Jackson Gaines Sr. He graduated from Rogers High School and is a WWII Veteran serving in the China-Burma-India CBI Theater, Persia now Iran. He was previously employed by Valet Cleaners, and the Newport Naval Base Disbursing Office. Mr. Gaines was retired from the US Postal Service, he served as Assistant Postmaster in Newport and Postmaster in Jamestown. He was a lifelong member of the former Mt. Olivet, now Community Baptist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees, the Senior Choir, the John H. Triplett Men?s Chorus, and Chairman of the Community Baptist Church Building Fund. Mr. Gaines was a Past Mater of Stone Mill Lodge #3, FAM, PHA, Past Patron of Queen Esther Chapter #2, OES, PHA and Past Grand Patron, RI Grand Chapter OES, PHA. Besides his wife, Bernice, of 58 years, he is survived by his son Albert P. Gaines III, his daughter-in-law Carol Ann and grandson Alexander all of Coventry, RI. He was predeceased by his d aughter Helene. He also leaves his three brothers William J., Robert B. and Paul L. Gaines all of Newport, RI, two sisters Margaret E. Burton of Altadena, CA and Estelle G. Drummond of Newport, RI. In addition, therre are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at 11:00 AM in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 16, 2005, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
