Albert R. Red Mello, 85, of Newport, RI and formerly of Hempstead, Long Island, and Brooklyn, NY, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown, RI.He was the husband of the late Lorraine Joseph Mello.Born in Newport, RI on January 2, 1926, he was the son of the late Ernest R. and Josephine Moniz Mello of Ayrault Street in Newport.Mr. Mello had attended local schools and was a US Army veteran of World War II. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater and Army of Occupation of Germany, receiving several medals and ribbons. He worked as a tester at the former Naval Torpedo Station in Newport. He later worked for 24 years as a riveter and assembler at Fairchild Aircraft in Hempstead, NY and other aircraft companies retiring in 1981. Red returned to Newport in 1985 enjoying his life long love of the sea shore and rides around the ocean drive.He is survived by his sister Mary E. Martin of Middletown, RI, his brother, Ernest A. Mello of Merritt Island, FL; three nieces, Margaret Call of Middletown, RI, Linda Martin of Colorado, and Maria Martin of Maine; three nephews, Thomas Demma of Ferndale, Washington, Frank Martin of Durham, NC, and Andrew Mello Merritt Island, FL.He was the brother of the late Alice Mello Ferreira.A private graveside service with Military Honors was held on Monday, April 4, 2011 in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown, RI.Arrangements were by Memorial Funeral Home, Newport, RI.
