Alex F. LaFerte, 46, of Locust Street, Providence, a retired Portsmouth RI Police Detective Sergeant, died unexpectedly at Saturday, December 27, 2003 at home.Born on May 5, 1957 in Manhattan, New York City, NY, he was the dearly loved grandson of the late Mary Virginia Frazer DeVoy. He was predeceased by his mother and mentor Patricia D. Butler Soares. Mr. LaFerte grew up in Manhattan and Grosse Pointe Farms Michigan. He moved to Portsmouth in 1971 and to Providence, RI in 1990.He graduated from the Portsmouth Abbey School in 1975. He attended Regis College in Denver, Colorado and continued his studies at Roger Williams University in Providence, RI. He was accepted to the Portsmouth RI Police Department in January 1979 as a patrol officer. He received many promotions throughout his 23 year career. He was most proud of his promotion to Detective Sergeant. He thoroughly enjoyed detective work until his retirement in April 2002. In his retirement, he was an avid reader, enjoyed the theater, music and spending time with his many friends.He is survived by his father, Robert D. Soares and step-mother, Julia Butler Soares of Portsmouth, RI; three sisters, Theresa A. Butler of Westerly, RI, Kelly A. McCartney of Warwick, RI, and Patricia D. Furtado of Fall River, MA. He is also survived by his beloved niece and Goddaughter, Samantha M. Butler of Westerly, RI. He will be sadly missed by the numerous friends who were privileged to know him.A private graveside funeral service will take place at St. Mary?s Churchyard, Portsmouth.
