Alexander "Sandy" Austin Cozzens, 78, of Portsmouth, RI passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in Bradenton, FL after a short illness. He was the husband of Mildred Stewart Cozzens.Sandy was born in Newport, RI on February 25, 1936, and was the son of the late Maclyn and Edith (Jones) Cozzens. He graduated from Rogers High School and worked for the telephone company retiring as a manager after nearly 40 years. After his retirement, Sandy enjoyed being a tour guide for Viking Tours of Newport. Sandy was a caring, compassionate man who always had a story and smile for everyone. He was an avid golfer who shared his love of golf with his son and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family, working on his beautifully maintained yard, going for coffee with his friends, and especially playing golf at Wanumetonomy Country Club.Beyond his work and family life, Sandy was a dedicated community servant. He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth where he served on the vestry, as Sr. Warden, and most recently as a trustee of the Sarah Gibbs Trust. He was also a Eucharistic Minister at both St. Mary's Church in Portsmouth, RI and Church of the Annunciation in Holmes Beach, FL. He was also a former member of several Boards of Directors including The Seamen's Church Institute, The Episcopal Charities Fund of Rhode Island, Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club, and Oakland Farm Condo Association II. Sandy is survived by his wife Millie of 53 years; his son David Cozzens and his wife Joan and their children Austin, Nathan, Jonathan, and Lauren Cozzens of Rutland, Vermont; his sister Bette DelNero of Newport; as well as several brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his brother John Robert Cozzens and his sister Jean Peckham.Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 16, 2014 from 4-7 pm at Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Ave, Newport, RI. His funeral will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 11am in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
