Alfred A. Almeida, Sr., 74, of Portsmouth, RI, died on Monday, March 30, 2015 at Newport Hospital surrounded by his loving family.Born in Portsmouth, RI, he was the son of the late Angelo and Gladys (Cory) Almeida. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Carter.He leaves behind his wife of 47 years, Cecilia (Nascimento) Almeida; his children, Alfred Almeida, Jr. and his wife, Paula, of North Carolina, Chuck Almeida of Middletown, RI, Melissa Simpson and her husband, John Simpson, Jr., of Tiverton, RI, and Jennifer Almeida of Newport, RI; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.Mr. Almeida was a lifelong Portsmouth resident and graduated from Portsmouth schools. Following school, he worked for many years at Rego Sanitation. In 1980, Mr. Almeida started his own construction business, AAA Construction, before retiring in 2000.He was a longtime member of both the Tiverton Rod Gun Club and the Seaconnet Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed the outdoors and hobbies including fishing, hunting, archery, skeet shooting, and spending time with family and friends.Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 3, 2015 from 5:00-8:00 PM in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.Burial will be private.Memorial donations may be made to the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Wagon Fund, PO Box 806, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
