Alfred Ainsworth, 92, of 329 Windstone Drive Portsmouth, formerly of 4 Canonicus Avenue, Newport, died Friday, January 20, 2006, at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. He was the husband of Barbara Grindrod Ainsworth. Born in New Bedford, MA on November 19, 1913, he was the son of the late Alfred Ainsworth Sr. and the late Mary Crone Ainsworth. Mr. Ainsworth worked as a wharf builder and shop planner for the Newport Naval Base for over 20 years, retiring in 1969. Alfred was a veteran of the US Army with three separate tours. He first served in the US Army in the 4th US Coast Artillery from 1932-1935, serving in Panama and later continued in the Army Reserve from 1939-41. He then rejoined the Army for service during World War II where he served in the Army Air Corps as a member of the 46th Fighter Squadron. During WWII he fought in air campaigns against Japan, and participated in ground combat on Iwo Jima, which took place when surviving Japanese troops launched their final offensive against American Marine and Air Corps forces on Iwo Jima in an early morning attack on March 26, 1945. Alfred was also a member of the Faith Fellowship Church in Portsmouth. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Barbara Ainsworth of Portsmouth, RI. They married in South Baptist Church in New Bedford, Mass on April 19, 1940. He is also survived by two sons Stephen Ainsworth of Watervliet, NY, and Donald Ainsworth of Portsmouth, RI, two daughters Lynne Winchell of Portsmouth, RI, and Jean Gallant of Wesport, MA, eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Alice Lincoln.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at 10:00am in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in New Bedford.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2006, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm in the Connors Funeral Home.
