Alfred C. White, 89, of Renfrew Avenue, Middletown, formerly of Broadway, Newport, died Thursday, December 23, 2010 at Newport Hospital.He was the husband of Louise Freitas White of Newport.Born in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Candida Raposa White.Mr. White was a WWII veteran serving in the US Army toward the end of the war in Kokura, Japan. Early in his career, he worked as a butcher in a grocery store on Broadway. He then worked for Newport Creamery in the processing plant for many years. He was a lifelong communicant of Jesus Saviour Church in Newport. He enjoyed listening to Red Sox games, spending time at his summer house in Tiverton and taking trips to Europe with his wife and attending several Oktoberfest. Alfred was a friendly and well liked man who could start a conversation or share a joke with just about anyone.In addition to his wife of nearly 50 years, he is survived by his brother, George White of Middletown, RI; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Joe Mello, John White, James White and Mary G. Phillips.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 from 4:00-7:00 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 9:00 am from Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport, RI. Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
