Middletown, RI - Alfred Edward Vaas, 80, of 140 Maple Avenue Middletown, died Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI.He was the husband of Jean Goday Vaas. Born in Lawrence, MA on May 25, 1924, he was the son of the late Henry Joseph and Agnes Wohlgemuth Vaas. Mr. Vaas served in the US Army during World War II. He was a radio operator at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a 1951 graduate of Brown University. Mr. Vaas worked at the Naval Underwater Station for 34 years as a mathematician. He worked on Volkswagen bugs, repaired VCRs and extensively researched his genealogy back to Germany. Besides his wife of 50 years, he is survived by two sons, Eric Vaas of Middletown, RI, and Andrew Vaas of North Providence, RI; two daughters Lisa Vaas of Mashpee, MA, and Pauline Vaas of Seffner, FL; three sisters, Rita Therrien of Andover, MA, Ruth McQuade of Lowell, MA, and Marie Page of Gig Harbor, WA; two granddaughters Chandra Kjellmark and Kayla Vaas; and many nieces and nephews. His memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2004, at 7:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery in Boston, MA on Monday, November 15 at 11:00am. Donations in his memory may be made to the Middletown Rescue Wagon Fund, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
