Newport, - Alfred F. Vierra, 78, of 35 Slocum Street Newport, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at home. He was the husband of Mary Elizabeth ?Betty? Wilson Vierra. They would have been married for 53 years on April 15. Born in Middletown, RI on November 11, 1924, he was the son of the late William and the late Rose Parvo Vierra. Mr. Vierra was a maintenance worker with Newport Electric Corporation before retiring in 1990. He also worked in his free time as a carpenter. His first job was as a truck driver for JT O?Connells. A veteran of WWII, Mr. Vierra served in Europe with the US Army Air Corps.He was a member of the Holy Ghost Society, the Kiwanis Club, the Newport Athletic Club and was a coach for Newport youth hockey. He was an avid gardener and had won several awards for ?Newport In Bloom?. He was a former member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth ?Betty? Vierra of Newport, RI; one son Brian Vierra of Warwick, RI; three daughters Mary Vierra and Ellen Michael both of Newport, RI; and Ann Tetrault of Middletown, RI; two sisters Margaret Stepp of Newport, RI and Alice Wright of South Hanahan, SC; Five Grandchildren and One Great Grandchild. He was the brother of the late William Vierra, the late Mary Froais and the late Rosalind Stepp. His funeral will be held Saturday, April 12, at 9:30 from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
