Alfred "Fred" Rolando, 92, of Newport died peacefully at home surrounded by his lovingfamily on Monday March 11, 2013.He was the loving husband of Olive (Harrison) Rolando.Born in Newport on December 23, 1920, he was the son of the late Camillo and Margherita(Conti) Rolando. Fred was a 1938 graduate of De La Salle Academy. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Corps with the 36th Air Depot Group in North Africa and Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart in North Africa. He was a retired letter carrier with 37 years of Federal service. He also worked at the Quonset Point Naval Air Station and the Maher Center. After retiring he was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.Olive and Fred were married for 66 years. He is also survived by his 7 children; PaulRolando and his wife Cindy of California, David Rolando and his wife Ann Marie of NorthCarolina, Betty Harrison, Mary Dunning and her husband Peter, Christine Murphy and herhusband Fred, Peter Rolando and his wife Gail, all of Newport and Kathy Christensen and herhusband Wally of Middletown. Fred was also the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildrenand 11 great grandchildren.He loved being at home spending time with his family. He was a wonderful husband andfather and will be deeply missed.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Spring Street inNewport on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 9:00 am. Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown with military honors.
