Narragansett, RI - Alfred Woodworth Ellis, Jr., 82, of Narragansett, RI, and formerly of the Point Section, Newport, died Thursday, January 21, 2010 at South County Hospital, Wakefield, RI.He was the husband of the late Mary F. Rossi Ellis. Born in Winthrop, MA on June 11, 1927, he was the son of the late Alfred Woodworth and Gertrude Nelson Ellis.Mr. Ellis served in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired from the Naval War College in 1983 after 37 years as an Electronics Technician. Mr. Ellis was a graduate of Winthrop High School. He went to work at the Boston Navy Yard as an electrical technician apprentice. He attended the Early Tech School for refrigeration and A/C. He owned and operated L-S Marine Electronics from 1957 to 1972 while finishing his career at the Naval War College. Mr. Ellis was a member of St. Pauls #14 Lodge of Masons and was Master in 1963, 1973 and 2004. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the York Rite. He is survived by his long time companion Barbara Carter of Narragansett, RI, his son Alfred W. Ellis, III and his wife Pamela of Cranston, RI, his daughters, Deborah A. Ellis of Sutton, MA and Cynthia M. Ellis of Western Australia, five grandchildren, Nathan Maine, Alfred Ellis, IV, Richard Ellis, Fredrick Pennachi and Mary Kathleen Pennachi and three great grandchildren, Daniel Ellis, Quinn Ellis and Colbie Ellis. He was the brother of the late Jeanne Nelson Ellis McKinney and Betty Alden Ellis. His funeral will be held on Monday, January 25, 2010, at 1:00 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2010, from 3-7pm in the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Pauls Lodge #14, Scholarship Fund, 115 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
