NEWPORT - Alice Connolly Clancy of Tiverton died on Saturday, May 3rd at Newport Hospital surrounded by her family.Born January 30th, 1946 as a native citizen of Newport, she was the daughter of the late Captain John P. and Alice Dwyer Connolly. Alice graduated from St. Catherines Academy in 1963 and crossed the bridge in September 1963 to enter The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Springfield, Massachusetts. She taught at St. Marys Milford, Massachusetts until leaving the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1970, when she returned to Newport as a reading specialist at Sullivan School. Alice married James E. Clancy on December 21st, 1974. She taught at Rogers High School and Thompson Middle School, where she was also involved in the teachers union. In 1990, Alice became principal of Cranston-Calvert School. Following her retirement from the Newport School Department in June 2001, she was a reading specialist at New England Institute of Technology and Curriculum Director of Westport Schools. She was appointed principal of St. Marys Academy Bay View Elementary School, East Providence in July 2007. All of her vocational positions, religous and secular, were a reflection of her abiding commitment to service and social justice.She is survived by the love of her life and husband of 33 years, James E. Clancy as well as her son, Thomas P. Clancy II and his wife Michelle of Dover, NH, her daughter, Dr. Mary Alice C. Clancy and her husband Dr. John M. Nagle of Derry, Northern Ireland. She leaves two brothers and a sister, John P. Connolly of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Edward A. Connolly and his wife Gertrude of Pawtucket; and Mary C. Connolly of Newport. A celebration of Alices life will be held at St. Josephs Church, Broadway, Newport on Wednesday, May 7th at 9:30am, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30am.
