Mrs. Alice Jones, age 85, of Middletown, passed away on September 27, 2021.
Alice was born in Lowell, MA to Charles and Jenny (Lomax) Bowden.
Mrs. Jones was a 1957 graduate of the Lowell State Teachers College, now known as Lowell University. She continued her education with graduate courses at the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College.
Mrs. Jones taught kindergarten and first grade for 39 years in Norwalk, CT, Tewksbury, MA and Middletown, RI. She taught kindergarten for 30 years at Walter E. Ranger School in Tiverton, RI, retiring in 1996.
Alice was a member of Emmanuel Church of Newport where she served on the Vestry and was a former Sunday School Superintendent.
She was a member of the National Education Association; the Retired Teachers National Education Association; and of the Retired Teachers Association of Newport County.
Mrs. Jones was also the author of several successful Federal grant applications including one for the Tiverton Drug Free Schools and for Mothers and Daughters, of which she was also the director of this program. Mothers and Daughters was one of the first federal grants for gender equality education sponsored by the Office of Civil Rights in Rhode Island.
Alice is survived by children, William Jones, Michael Jones, and Gordon Jones, and her sister, Margaret Hammersley. Mrs. Jones will also be missed by her six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Jones, and her parents, Charles and Jenny Bowden.
