Alice M. Loftus

November 29, 1932 — June 10, 2015

Alice M. (Caron) Loftus of Newport died on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 after a short and sudden illness surrounded by her children whom she called the "Firehouse Five". Alice was 82 years young. She was the wife of the late George W. Loftus of Newport and was a mother of five, grandmother of eleven, and great grandmother of nine, waiting with great anticipation and joy for another two in 2015.Born Alice Mary Caron on November 29, 1932 in Fall River, MA, she was the fifth child of Daniel and Emily (Oliver) Caron. She was the sister of the late Daniel Caron of Stoughton, Francis Caron, Evelyn (Caron) Cox, and is survived by her sister Dorothy (Caron) Sprague, all of Newport. Alice leaves behind a large and loving family; Christine (Loftus) and Mario Ferreira and their children Michael (and wife Brooke and children Ryan and Lily), and Timothy (and wife Alison and daughter Emery); Garrett and Kathy Loftus and their children Andrew (and wife Emily and children Leo and Ben), Meg (Loftus) Brennan (and husband Raleigh and son Jameson) and the late Patrick Loftus; George and Laura Loftus and their children Taylor (Loftus) Kopocis (and husband Jeff and their daughter Georgia), and Christopher; Sharon (Loftus) and Robert Oxx of Rochester, NH and their children Brian (and wife Amanda) and Michael; and Theresa (Loftus) and Andrew Dickinson of North Kingstown, RI and their children Matthew (and wife Sara and children Oliver and Paige) and Adam (and wife Jillian). Born in Fall River, Massachusetts she moved to Newport when she was nine years old, where she met her lifelong friend Helen Oakley. She attended Hazard Memorial School (St. Joseph's) and Saint Catherine's Academy where she graduated in 1950 with honors. Alice remained active in her class activities serving on all class reunion committees for over 60 years. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph's Church for decades and later joined the Jesus Saviour parish family. Many in Newport know Alice from her position as the office manager for Dr. Anthony Caputi, DDS where she greeted generations of Newporters who were his patients. She was also a fixture at her position of cashier at the C.H. Charles store on Broadway where she worked for decades. Called Mom by her children, Nana by her grandchildren, and GG by her great-grandchildren, she always said she like to go to work because there, people called her Alice. Alice was an active member of the St. Joseph's Mothers' Club while raising her children and was the founding librarian at Hazard Memorial School. She also worked as a poll worker and supervisor during several elections. She was a modest person who worked tirelessly behind the scenes in support of many efforts, such as serving as the secretary for the Newport Firefighter Pension Association. In her retirement years, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and she was always ready to help with any church function. She was a true and loyal friend to many. But her greatest pride and source of joy was her large and loving family of thirty-eight who will miss her greatly.A wake will be held at Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday, June 14th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.
