Allen H. Smith

November 30, 1937 — February 8, 2013

Allen H. Smith of Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Tiverton, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2013 from injuries sustained in a fall. Allen was born November 30, 1937 in Worcester, MA, son of Herbert A. and Jean Sanborn (Wayman) Smith. He is survived by his wife Alice Clark-Smith, his children Karen Biastre (Steve) of Middletown, Cheryl Smith-DiGennaro of Portsmouth, Jason Smith of Wakefield, Alison Olson (Chris) of Fairhaven, MA and his four grandsons, Nathan Biastre, Nikolas and Justin Smith-DeGennaro, and Jakob Olson. He was the brother of Nancy J. Sweet of Hallieford, VA, and the late Caryl E. Uhlman and Cynthia A. Carlson. Raised in Westboro, MA, he graduated from Westboro High School in 1955. He then served three years in the U.S. Army Security Agency stationed in Armara, Eritrea, East Africa. He attended Bryant college and was a financial manager with Raytheon Company, Portsmouth, RI for much of his thirty years, retiring in 1993. Allen was active over the years in community services. He was Chairman of the Portsmouth Budget Committee, President of the Tiverton/Little Compton Credit Union, Tiverton Youth Soccer coach, Tiverton Tax Assessor, Founder of the Tiverton Historical Cemetery Commission, Treasurer and grant writer for the Tiverton Land Trust, co-founder of the Pardon Gray Preserve, co-founder of Stafford Heights Park and a Steward for Weetamoo Woods. Allen enjoyed golf, tennis, and skiing, although not in retirement due to his progressing multiple sclerosis. He was a strong advocate of land conservation through planned growth, open space and keeping Tiverton a rural community. Calling hours will be held Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871. His memorial services will be Friday, February 15, 2013 at 11:00a.m. in the United Congregational Church, 4 South of Commons Road, Little Compton, RI 02837.
