Newport, RI - Alson A. Castonguay, 73, of 20 Hope Street, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at Newport Hospital after an eight year battle with cancer. He was married for 45 years to the late Mary P. Janaros Castonguay. He was born on Mother?s Day, May 14, 1933, in Newport, RI to the late Rose Alma Gagnon Castonguay and the late Alfred Theophile Castonguay.Alson attended Hazard Memorial School and graduated from Rogers High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 during the Korean War and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska as a signalman and diesel mechanic. He graduated in 1959 from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in accounting. Mr. Castonguay worked as an inshore lobsterman in Newport Harbor during his college years. From 1960-1995 he was an investigative auditor for the United States General Accounting Office GAO in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was involved in examining many Cold War Programs. Mr. Castonguay was a parishioner at St. Spyridon?s Greek Orthodox Church were he served in the past on the parish council. He was a member of the Order of Ahepa, the Rose Island Lighthouse, the Point Association, the Middletown Senior Center, Friends of the Waterfront, the Newport Player?s Guild and the Newport Art Museum. He is survived by his daughter Cristina A. Hartley and her husband Leonard of Middletown, RI, two granddaughters Anita K. Hartley of Newport, RI and Maya Alexa Hartley of Middletown, RI. His funeral will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at 10:30 am in St. Spyridons Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport.
