Newport, RI - Amario Amos Lopes, Jr., 89, of 15 C Kingston Avenue Newport, RI, died Saturday, September 27, 2008 in Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Anne Gomes Lopes. Born in Marion, MA on Nov. 27, 1918, he was the son of the late Amario Amos and Lena Rebelo-Monteiro Lopes Sr.Mr. Lopes served in the Civil Conservation Corps in the 141st Co. in Westerly, RI during WWII, he was given an honorable discharge with an excellent performance. Mr. Lopes retired from the Laborers International Union of North America which he was a member of for 61 years.Mr. Lopes along with the late Earl Mosher and the late Joe Lombard owned and operated a construction company called Black and White Construction Company in 1976. Upon retiring from the union, he held various landscaping jobs. He was an avid tree cutter. The last tree he climbed and cut down was when he was 85 years old. He was an avid Red Sox Fan, 1918 was a good year. Mr. Lopes was a lifetime member of the Cape Verdean Club in Newport He leaves his children Glenda Thomas of East Providence, RI, Gale Lopes-Webb of New London, CT and Geronimo Lopes of Dartmouth, MA. He was the grandfather of Nathaya Carter Johnson, Ancel Carter II, Meiko Lewis, Shelly Carter, Juan Carter, Jeanine Antone, Mark Antone, Donald Antone, Tommy Green Jr. and Tanya Green, Antoine Carter, Davon Antone, Destiny Antone, Ancel Carter III, Alajandra Carter, He was also the great grandfather of Jamal Carter, Nyesha Carter, India Johnson, Hayward Johnson II, Markus Sampson, Eddie Hampton, Claudesha Hampton, Ty-Juan Carter, Ben Lopes, Kevin Lopes, Timeka, Peer, Timothy Peer II, Enlincio Lewis, William Gaw, Brent Carter, Juan Carter II, Ammar Carter, Day Carter, Ashley Rios and Jovan Rios and Ancel Carter. Mr. Lopes leaves behind his great great grandchildren Nyeriel Amario, Sekhi Hayward, Elciana Jadia, Elsiana Ramos and Ashanti Baptista, with his nieces Nina Keller, Marcella Jenkins, Debbie Dillard, Maria Adele Robinson, Theadora Mathis and Virginia Lee Mathis.He was the father of the late Michele Lopes and Thomas Green as well as brother of the late Margaret Keller and Mary Mathis and grandfather of the late Keith Antone. His funeral will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 8:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway Newport with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am St. Josephs Church Broadway at Mann Avenue Newport.
