Amelia Catherine Edward-Corbett, 30 of 916 West Main Road, Middletown, slipped away from her family on Thursday, May 24 at Tufts Medical Center, after a long battle against Hodgkin's lymphoma. Born in Newport December 14, 1981, she was the daughter of John W. Corbett and Susan Edward. Amelia graduated from Middletown High School and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she was recognized as a merit scholar. She lived a very active life, enjoying swimming, surfing, kayaking, and running. Working in many artistic areas---painting, fashion, photography, she developed a particular interest in Chinese art forms, especially calligraphy, following a trip to China in 2002.After being diagnosed with cancer at age 24, she decided it was time to fulfill her life-long wish to have a dog. Thundercloud, a German Shepherd puppy of 8 weeks, chose Amelia to be her best friend. They were inseparable and worked very hard to make Thundercloud "the best dog".Amelia's friends meant the world to her, and she loved giving them gifts. She was known for her ability to find precisely the right gift for everyone. As she spent more time in treatment she became less mobile and her interest turned to cooking, to which she again brought her artistry.Always a voracious reader, her reading list shifted more toward health and health care. She wanted to work in the medical field and started studying biology and anatomy. Unable to continue her studies, she brought her knowledge to her own treatment. Doctors and nurses marveled at her knowledge of anatomy and medical procedures. She had a very special quality in the way she related to people---always with a sense of humor and a very personal connection, which was greatly admired by all who knew her.Besides her parents, she is survived by her closest friend and brother, John Edward-Corbett and her "little sister" Sadie Pappas of Somerville, MA and her sister Sara Edward-Corbett of Brooklyn, NY. She was the niece of her beloved aunt and uncle, Jane and David Steele of Middletown. She also regrettably leaves her very good friends, Liz Mack of Amsterdam, Michaela Ebbitt of Florida, and Erin Eastern of New York.Traditional calling hours are omitted. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Friends and family are invited to visit 916 West Main Road, Middletown on Sunday 1:00 - 4:00 PM. Donations in Amelia's memory may be made to the American Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
