Bristol, RI - Amy Helga Janes Bare, 92, of 3 Sakonnet Terrace, Middletown, RI, died Sunday, October 19, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Manor Bristol, RI after a long illness.She was the wife of the late Reverend Carl Brenton Bare, former pastor of the United Congregational Church, Newport, RI. Born in Newport, RI on Dec. 28, 1910, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Sophie Hillstrom Janes. As a young woman, Mrs. Bare was active in one of the first Newport Girl Scout troops. She attended Rogers High School and was also a member of the Class of 1935 of Rhode Island State College, now the University of Rhode Island, where she studied early childhood education and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Mrs. Bare was for many years the proprietor of Amy Janes-Ye Viking Shoppe, a very popular childrens clothing and toy store on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. In that capacity she clothed generations of children from Newport and across the nation and was said to have remembered countless childrens names and clothes sizes from season to season. She was a long-time supporter and member of many charitable and cultural organizations, including the Newport Art Association and Museum, the Newport Historical Society, the Preservation Society of Newport County, and the Redwood Library and Athenaeum. In the 1970s she was a leading member of the faithful remnant group that saved the Newport Congregational Church and worked to preserve the Churchs noted John La Farge opalescent glass windows and interior murals. She was the sister of the late John J. Janes and Mary L. Janes. A private graveside service will be held at the Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown, at 10:00AM, Wednesday, October 22. Arrangements are by the Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport.
