Newport, - Angelina "Ann" P. DeCotis Martellino, age 106, passed away peacefully at home with her loving family by her side, on Friday, May 2, 2014. Ann was born in Newport on February 12, 1908 to the late Loretta (Bruno) and Michele DeCotis. She was the wife of the late Paul A. Martellino, whom she was married to for 51 years. Paul preceded her in death in 1989.As a young girl, Ann worked at what was known as the "cigar factory" on Thames Street. At 19 years old her father brought her into his barber business as a hair dresser. She worked as a hair dresser along with her younger sister, Laura, for over 17 years.In 1938 she married Paul and they settled into their home in Newport raising a daughter. Ann lived in their home for 75 years until her death. Ann was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church. She was a yard mother at Hazards Memorial School, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Rosary and Altar Society of St. Joseph's.Ann loved working in arts and crafts, and she would help create beautiful arrangements for the St. Joseph Church Harvest Festival every Fall. She also worked with a wonderful group of ladies, many whom became lifetime friends, making crafts for the "Sisters of the Poor" on Narragansett Avenue each year when they had their bazaar to raise money.Ann was a stay at home mom and homemaker. Her talents of sewing outfits, knitting sweaters, and crocheting her famous afghans was enjoyed by family and friends. Ann loved sitting in her favorite chair at home doing her word search puzzles. Her most enjoyable part of life was caring for her yard. She loved being in her backyard trimming her flowers and shrubs and you could always find her in the Fall season raking the leaves. She loved shoveling the snow each winter, up until she was 94. Most important of all to Ann was her family. She was very involved in all of their lives. Her five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren were so blessed to have her in their lives for so long.Ann is survived by her daughter, Diane Smyth and son in law, Harry Smyth. And her five grandchildren, Stephanie Smyth, Jon Paul Smyth, Eric Smyth, Douglas Smyth and Gregory Smyth. Also her five great grandchildren, Kayla Smyth, Eric Welch, Kevin Welch, Ethan Welch, and Kaden Turner. She also leaves many nieces and nephews living in Rhode Island and New York. Besides her husband and parents she is pre-deceased in death by her sisters, Philomena DeCotis LaPolla, and Laura DeCotis O'Brien. Also her brothers Anthony DeCotis, Joseph DeCotis, Henry DeCotis, Michael DeCotis and Alfred DeCotis.Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 8:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in St. Josephs Church, Broadway And Mann Avenue, Newport.Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4:00 - 7:00pm in the funeral home.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.In lieu of flowers please send donations to Visiting Nurse Service Hospice of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
