Middletown, RI - Anne W. Smith, 90, of 600 Valley Road, Middletown, RI, died Monday, October 30, 2006 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. Born in Queenstown now Cobh County Cork, Ireland, on October 22, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Robert Joseph and Mary OFarrell Smith. She immigrated with her family to the United States in 1928 and lived on Aquidneck Island most of her life. She became a US citizen in 1933.Mrs. Smith attended the Pension School in Queenstown and St. Joseph High School in Newport. She graduated from the Newport Hospital School of Nursing in the class of 1937 and was Past President of the Newport School of Nursing Alumni Association. Nan had a long and satisfying career as a registered nurse, serving her country in the Army in WWII, working as a supervisor at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket and for many years as a private duty nurse. She was the secretary at the Seaman?s Church Institute for 35 years and a dear friend and companion of the late Reverend Archie Burdick. Nan enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Florida and southern climates. She loved her family, her friends, her canine companions, and attracting birds to her garden. She is survived by her son Hal and his wife Marcia Creel Jensen of Florence, SC, her grandchildren, Christopher Jensen of Baltimore, MD and Kathryn Jensen Keith of Greenville, SC, her great grandchildren, Charlotte Jeanne and Cormac Jensen of Baltimore, MD and Owen and Ellis Keith of Greenville, SC, her brother Michael and his wife Marie Pinto Smith of Middletown, RI, her sister Winifred and her husband Robert C. Sullivan of Portsmouth, RI and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. She was the sister of the late John N. Smith, Robert J. Smith, Charles Smith, Francis Smith and Mary Segerson. Her funeral will be held on Friday, November 3, 2006, at 8:00am, from the Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am, in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial will be in St. Marys Episcopal Churchyard in Portsmouth.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2006, from 3-7pm in the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Seamans Church Institute, 18 Market Square, Newport, RI 02840.
