Anthony P. Uncle Coca, 91, of Corey Lane, Middletown, RI, formerly of Newport, RI, died Monday, March 21, 2011 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown.He was the husband of the late Adella V. Gerlach Coca.Born in Newport, RI on June 19, 1919, he was the son of the late Peter Nuncio and Grace Caratazzolo Coca.Mr. Coca was a 1939 graduate of Rogers High School; he played football and baseball. He entered military service in 1942 and was stationed in Africa and then Italy, where he was wounded.Mr. Coca was a disabled Army veteran of World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He worked as a laborer at the Newport Naval Torpedo Station and the Davisville Yards and Docks Supply Center and Underwater Ordinance Station. In 1963, he transferred and worked as a warehouseman at the Newport Naval Supply Center where he received numerous cash awards for superior achievement. He retired from federal civil service in 1969. In 1971, he then started work at the Newport Creamery on Bellevue Avenue in Newport as a janitor until finally retiring in 1989.He was a lifetime communicant of St. Marys Church in Newport and was a member of its Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and was an avid sports enthusiast, especially a fan of the Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots. He also enjoyed listening to music and reading.He is survived by his daughter, Patricia A. Vorro of Middletown, his granddaughter, Chelsea A. Vorro of Middletown, and his other children, William E. Conley and his wife, Robin, and their children, April, Amber Costa, Taryn, Kendall and Cameryn of Middletown, Rosella Nappi of North Kingstown, and Michael Conley and his wife, Suzanne, and their children Megan and Michaela of Middletown. He was the brother of the late Anna Conley, Edith Blackington, Julia Coca, Teresa Provenzano, Martha Richard, and Joseph and Edward Coca.His funeral will be held on Friday, March 25, 2011 at 8 am from Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 am in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 from 4-7 pm in the funeral home.The family requests, per Mr. Cocas instructions, that you omit flowers and please make a memorial donation in his name to Beacon Hospice, 1130 Ten Rod Rd # C104, North Kingstown, RI 02852-4127.
