Antone E. Mendonca

PORTSMOUTH, RI - Antone Eugene Mendonca, 97, of 258 Turnpike Avenue, Portsmouth, RI, who retired to Boynton Beach, FL, died Monday, May 23, 2005, at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Evelyn M. Jordan Mendonca. Born in Middletown, RI on April 14, 1908, he was the son of the late Francisco L. and Maria Perreira Mendonca.Antone owned and operated Mendonca?s Nursery on East Main Road in Middletown, until his retirement. He was a member and director of Eastern RI Conservation District from 1952 to 1976. Antone was also a member and Past President of the RI Nurserymans Association Inc., a member and past master of the Portsmouth Grange # 29, a member of the Holyname Society of Jesus Saviour and a member of the Board of Canvesses for the town of Middletown for 13 years. Antone was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. He is survived by his siblings George A. Mendonca and Virginia Mendonca both of Portsmouth, RI, and many nieces nephews.He was the brother of the late Frank A. Mendonca, Joseph P. Mendonca, Mary A. Elshant, Sylvania Rogers, Angelina Cotta and Margaret L. Mendonca. His funeral will be held on Friday, May 27, 2005, at 8:30 AM from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway And Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on May 26, 2005, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm in the Connors Funeral Home.
