Newport, RI - Archibald Hugh Douglas, Jr., 81, of 58 Kay Street Newport, died Sunday, October 3, 2004 at Village House Newport, RI.He was the husband of Jean Van Curen Douglas. Born in San Diego, CA on November 23, 1922, he was the son of the late Archibald H. and Winifred Davis Douglas. Mr. Douglas graduated in 1940 from St. Georges School, from Princeton University in 1944 with a BA in Architecture and from the National War College in 1969. He was in the United States Army from April to July of 1943; he then went to work at the Naval Torpedo Station in July of 1943 and the U.S. Department of the State from November of 1944 to December of 1977. Mr. Douglas was a Diplomatic Courier from 1944 to 1947. He was in Munich from 1947 to 1949, Hamburg from 1949 to 1950, St. Johns in Newfoundland, Canada from 1950 to 1953, Glasgow UK from 1953 to 1956 and Washington, DC from 1956 to 1959 as the American Vice Consul. He was in Haiti from 1959 to 1962, Istanbul from 1962 to 1964, Saigon from 1964 to 1965, Washington, DC from 1965 to 1972, and Barcelona from 1972 to 1974 as the American Consul. Mr. Douglas was in Caracas, Venezuela from 1974 to 1977 as the American Consul General; he was also on the Board of Examiners from Sept. 1977 to Dec. 1977 in Washington, DC. He was a member of the Princeton Club of New York, the Princeton Club of Washington, DC, the Nassau Club of Princeton, the Spouting Rock Beach Association in Newport, RI, the Newport Country Club and the Diplomatic and Consular Officers Retired DACOR Washington, DC. He is survived by his wife of fifty five years, Jean Douglas of Newport, RI, two sons A. Hugh Douglas III of Vienna, VA, and Stephen T. Doulgas of Nashville, TN, a daughter Sandra D. Pumroy of Paw Paw, WV, and three grandchildren Molly F. Douglas, Samuel W. Douglas and James VC Douglas.He was the father of the late Patricia Dale Douglas. His funeral and burial were private.Donations in his memory may be made to the Robert Potter League For Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.Arrangements were by the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
