Arlene Goguen

March 21, 1921 — December 7, 2015

Arlene Goguen, recently of Portsmouth , RI and a longtime resident of New Bedford and South Dartmouth, MA died on Monday, December 7, 2015. She was the widow of the late Leo A. Goguen, and the daughter of the late Albert and Hannah McDonald. Arlene was predeceased by her two brothers Leslie McDonald and John McDonald , and her three sisters Rachel McGowan, Lillian Owens, Grace Marsh.Born in New Bedford, MA she travelled extensively with her Army officer husband and two daughters. Part of that travel took them to Germany in the early stages of the Cold War for nine years and then back to the states to live in Maryland for four years. One of her favorite things to do while in Maryland was to catch and eat blue crabs from Chesapeake Bay. When her husband retired as a Major after a twenty year career in the Army, the family moved back to New Bedford to be close to relatives.Arlene was married for 56 years when her husband passed away in January 1998. She lived the last four years with her daughter Leslie and son-in-law Brian Smith. A loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Arlene will be dearly missed .Arlene is survived by her two daughters, Patricia J. (Ronald) Spaeth of Bigfork, MT and LeslieA. (Brian) Smith of Portsmouth, RI, four grandsons, Scott (Cindy) Freitas of American Fork, Utah, Chad Freitas of New Bedford, Colin (Mary) Smith of Trappe, PA, and Matthew Smith of Pawtucket, RI, six great grandchildren, and nine nieces and nephews.A private memorial mass will be held at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Portsmouth RI at later date.
