Arthur George Smith, Jr

Arthur G. Smith, Jr., (MCPO, US Navy, ret.), known to many as "Smitty" or "Buddy", 74, formerly of Middletown, RI and stationed in Newport, RI, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at his home in Chesapeake, VA.Born in Manhattan, NY on September 22, 1940, he was the oldest child of seven to the late Arthur G. Smith and Rita (Smith) Smith.Mr. Smith was a US Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, having served 33 years retiring as a MCPO. During his long and dedicated career, he served on many naval ships and was stationed at Naval Station Squad Group 4. Following his retirement from the US military, Arthur continued his career as a Naval Ship Inspector. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4487, Middletown, RI and American Legion Post #0280. Arthur was an avid sports fan and enjoyed fishing cooking, barbecuing, and gardening. In his younger years, he was also a Volunteer Fire Fighter in New Jersey. He is survived by his children, Arthur G. Smith, III of Newport, RI, Susan M. Smith of Middletown, RI, Victoria Smith of South Kingstown, RI and George P. Smith of Chesapeake, VA; his siblings, Margaret Shewin, Virginia Rivera, and Bobby, Donald, Martin and William Smith; his grandchildren and great-granchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 from 5-8 p.m. in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 9 a.m. in St. Lucy Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI.
