Middletown, RI - CDR, Arthur John Suddaby, USNR, RET 87, of Middletown, RI, died Saturday, July 25, 2009 at the Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Irene Barchie Suddaby. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, on November 30, 1921, he was the son of the late John and Anna Thompson Suddaby. Besides his wife of 62 years, he is survived by a daughter Cynthia Suddaby Kennedy and her husband Kevin Kennedy of Elmira, NY, and two grandchildren Katherine Suddaby Kennedy of Atlanta, GA, and Elizabeth Suddaby Kennedy of Washington, DC. Mr. Suddaby graduated from California University of Pennsylvania and also received a M Ed from the University of Pittsburgh. He worked as an educator in Pittsburgh, PA, and Trumbull, CT for 30 years, retiring in 1983.In 1943 Mr. Suddaby entered OCS at Columbia University and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy in June. He served aboard the USS Cassin Young DD-793 during WWII in the Pacific. After the war he continued an active roll in the Naval Reserve and retired in 1981 at the rank of Commander.Mr. Suddaby was a life sponsor of the Naval War College Foundation. He was active with the Meals on Wheels program and volunteered at the Newport Tennis Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Newport Preservation Society and Trinity Church. The Rev. David Dobbins led a graveside burial service will full military honors at St. Marys Churchyard in Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Charity of Ones Choice.
