Arthur M. Hines

Arthur M Hines, 90, of Middletown, RI, died on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Newport Hospital surrounded by his family.Born August 15, 1925 in Oriental, NC, he was the son of the late Joseph Garnie Hines, Sr. and the late Mollie (Greene) Hines. He was married to his loving wife, the late Marie Elizabeth (Antone) Hines.Mr. Hines served in the US Army during WWII. In 1945, he enlisted in the US Navy for 25 years of service. Upon retiring, he went to the National School of Meat Cutting in Toledo, Ohio. He worked at Tom Ouellette's Star Market in the meat department and retired from the Government Commissary Stores after 10 years. He enjoyed watching sports, always rooting for the local teams and having a good conversation on politics and the military. Being a butcher, he loved cooking Sunday dinners with Marie for their family. In the earlier days, they enjoyed having family gatherings and cook-outs in the back yard. He became close to his family in North Carolina though long conversations on the telephone. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Matthews and her husband, Thomas, of Middletown, RI; his sons, John J. Gonsalves, Jr, and his wife, Naomi, of Dartmouth, Mass. and William (Billy) Gonsalves of Middletown, RI. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard M. Gonsalves. His surviving sisters, Classie Farrow (Vernon), Sophia Cannon (Willie) of Oriental, NC, and Helen Saunders (Charles) of Landover, MD; his surviving brothers, Joseph Hines Jr. (Madeline) and John Hines (Fannie) of Oriental, NC. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Clarence Hines and Thomas Hines. He has five grandchildren, Anthony Gonsalves, Valerie Pires, Billy Gonsalves, Jr., Alicia Gonsalves and Michael Matthews; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 21, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 10:00 AM in the funeral home.Burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown, RI..
