Arthur Marshall, 83, of Newport, passed peacefully Saturday, January 19, 2019 in Newport Hospital. Son of the late Arthur and Rosalina (Medeiros) Marshall, he was born in Newport and raised on the family farm in Middletown (now Marshall Lane). Arthur became a carpenter and later served as a deputy sheriff. He worked for the Newport Restoration Foundation with Doris Duke dismantling and restoring 18th century homes in Newport County. Eventually, he became an expert in historic homes and post and beam structures establishing Arthur Marshall Restorations, Ltd. in 1976.
Arthurs proudest achievement was his restoration of the Chinese Tea House on Cliff Walk in 1982. Known as one of Americas foremost authorities in colonial reproductions, he won numerous awards, with his work appearing in several publications. Arthur restored seven Newport mansions, twenty 18th century homes, and reproduced ten more. He worked on the Prescott Farm restoration, a Middletown landmark. Arthur restored the Horseshoe Piazza at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, built the acoustical panels for the stage at PPAC in Providence, and constructed a screening room for Miramax in Westport, CT.
He loved classical and opera music, and spent retirement enjoying his pets and passion for travel. Arthur was always willing to lend a hand to anyone.
Arthur leaves his children Marguerite Groux and her husband Walter of Glade Spring, VA, Paul S. Marshall of Middletown, Anita M. Dalton and her husband Michael of North Kingstown, Peter Marshall of Middletown, and his former wife Clarinda Marshall of Middletown. He is also survived by his sister Agnes Pendergast and her husband Thomas of Vero Beach, FL as well as his granddaughters, Kristina Marshall and Nicole Marshall.
He was the father of the late Catherine Marshall and brother of the late John Marshall and Theresa McSheehy.
Calling hours will be held Friday, January 25, 2018 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI
His funeral will be held on Saturday, at 8:30 AM from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM at Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery.
