Newport, RI - Arthur Monteiro, 80, of 19 Chapel Street, Newport, RI, formerly of 606 Newport Green, Newport, died Monday, June 12, 2006 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Rita Monteiro. Born in New Bedford, MA, on May 4, 1926, he was the son of the late Julia Monteiro-Gomes.Mr. Monteiro was in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He was a chef for 25 years at Raytheon, retiring in 1988. After his retirement he worked at Stop and Shop on Bellevue Avenue. He also worked at Shamrock Cliff and the former Coachman in Tiverton as a chef, and he was also a supervisor at the Newport County YMCA. Mr. Monteiro was a communicant of St. Marys Church. He was a lifetime member of the Cape Verdean Club of Newport, a member of the Newport Knights of Columbus #256 Council 3rd Degree and also a member of the Cape Verdean American Veterans Association of New Bedford, MA. Mr. Monteiro loved to play bingo, dance and listen to music. He was an avid Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics fan. He is survived by his children Arthur ?Buddy? Monteiro Jr. and his wife Elaine of New Bedford, MA, Allan J. Monteiro and Carol of New Bedford, MA, Anthony Paul Turner and his wife Catherine of Newport, RI, Steven J. Turner of Warwick, RI, and June M. Monteiro-Watson of New Bedford, MA, his brothers August Gomes Jr., Joseph Gomes and his wife Josephine, Raymond Gomes and his wife Julie, Donald Gomes and his wife Carol, and Paul Gomes, all of New Bedford, MA, his sisters Louise Monteiro-Ramos and her husband Joseph of New Bedford, MA, and Mary Spinola and her husband Anthony of Onset, MA, his grandchildren Robin C. Monteiro, Anthony Monteiro, Kera Monteiro, Christian Monteiro, Gabrielle Monteiro, Alana Monteiro and Gabrielle Turner, eleven great grandchildren, his companion Rose Weston of Newport, RI and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Janice G. Monteiro and the brother of the late David Gomes, Anthony Gomes and Katherine Texiera. His funeral will be held on Friday, June 16, 2006, at 8:00a.m. from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00a.m. in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2006, from 5-8p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home.
