Athena S. Damaskos, 97, of Heatherwood Health Care Center, Newport, RI, formerly of Boughton Road, Newport, died Saturday, February 23, 2008 at the nursing home. She was the wife of the late Nicholas J. Damaskos.Born in Newport, RI on August 17, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Stamos and Edith Alexander Logothets.Athena was a graduate of Rogers High School. She owned and operated Ediths Candy Shop until her retirement in 1971, located at the site of the new police station on Broadway. She was a member of St. Spyridons Greek Orthodox Church, where she served on the building committee and was past president of the Philoptochos Society. Mrs. Damaskos was a charter member, past president, and secretary for many years for Daughters of Penelope, Aries Chapter Newport, and was honored as Penelopean of the Year for her dedicated service to the organization. She was also a past Worthy Matron of Order of Eastern Star, Aquidneck Chapter and advisor to Rainbow Girls. She was an avid bowler in her free time.She is survived by her son Demetri N. Damaskos and his wife Irene of Newport, RI, three grandchildren Catherine Jennings, Stephanie Damaskos, and Nikki Cesario, and one great grandson Christopher Nicholas Cesario. She is also survived by nieces Louise Rick, Linda Carlisle, and nephew Nicholas Logothets, all of Newport. She was preceded in death by her brother Nicholas S. Logothets. Her funeral will be held on Thursday, February 28 at 9:00 a.m. from the Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, with a funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Spyridons Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport. Burial will be in North Burial Ground in Newport. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. in the Hambly Funeral Home.Memorial donations may be made to St. Spyridons Philoptochos Scholarship Fund.
