Newport, RI ? Attilio ?Arthur? DeAscentis, 90, of 129 Carroll Avenue, Newport, RI, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Evelyn Kimball DeAscentis. Born in Newport, RI on June 21, 1916, he was the son of the late John and Giuditta Caputi DeAscentis.Mr. DeAscentis was a police officer for the Newport Police Department retiring in 1967. He was a lifetime member of the F. O. P. He also worked as a manager at Gooseberry Beach and as a toll collector on the Mount Hope Bridge. A versatile athlete, Arthur was an imposing pitcher, starring in the Sunset League during the 1940s and 1950s. In his younger years, he was a spirited handball and paddleball player at the Newport YMCA. In his later years, he brought his athletic skills to the tennis court and became a fixture at the Aquidneck Courts where a powerful serve and competitive spirit characterized his play. Arthur enjoyed gardening and, throughout his life, he especially enjoyed the company of his extended and close knit family.Besides his wife of 60 years, he is survived by his children, Arthur M. DeAscentis of Fall River, MA, and Donna M. DeAscentis of Marshfield, WI, his brothers, Ettorino DeAscentis of Middletown, RI, John DeAscentis of Palm Coast, FL, Hugo and Geno DeAscentis of Newport, RI, his grandsons, Stephen and Christopher Montgomery of Marshfield, WI and John and Thomas DeAscentis of Fall River, MA, and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Robert K. DeAscentis and the brother of the late Manley and Edward DeAscentis. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 3rd at 11 am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
