August F. Gus Ferreira, 85, of Dexter Street, Portsmouth, RI, died on Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Newport Hospital.He was the loving husband of Eileen E. Harrison Ferreira, with whom he celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last October.Born in Portsmouth, RI on September 3, 1925, he was the son of the late Jacinto and Filomenia Freitas Ferreira.Gus worked on the family farm for numerous years before opening and operating the Village Barber Shop for 32 years on East Main Road in Portsmouth. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, a communicant of St. Anthony Church in Portsmouth, an active lifetime member and volunteer of numerous organizations including the Portsmouth Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus in Portsmouth, the Portuguese American Citizens Club P.A.C.C. in Portsmouth, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Gus was an avid gardener and loved spending time with his family and friends.In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Paul Ferreira and his wife, Nan, Stephen Ferreira and his partner, Alan S. Corcoran, David Ferreira and his wife, Lori, and Mary McGeough and her husband, Peter; four grandchildren, Dana and Jesse Ferreira, Norman Martin and Kimberly Nelson; and one great-granddaughter, Ruby Jane Nelson.He was the brother of the late Manuel, Joseph, Jesse, John and Edward Ferreira, Mary Silvia and Lydia Medeiros.His funeral will be held on Friday, March 18, 2011 at 9 am from Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Anthony Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. Burial will follow in Portsmouth Cemetery, Portsmouth.Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2011 from 4-8 pm in the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Fund, PO Box 806, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or to Visiting Nursing Services of Newport Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
