Augustin Anthony "Gus" Toppa

Augustin Anthony "Gus" Toppa, 85, of Rogers Lane, Middletown, RI, died on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the RI Veterans Home in Bristol, RI. He was the husband of Nancy (Kelly) Toppa.Born on October 11, 1927 in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Anthony and Annie (Capuano) Toppa. Mr. Toppa served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked as a truck driver for the former Maher Moving / Waste Management Company for 38 years. Gus belonged to the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and he loved fishing off Ocean Drive and taking Sunday drives.In addition to his wife of 28 years, he is survived by his children, Mary Jane Zilinger of Newport, RI, George Toppa of Newport, RI, Gus Toppa and his wife Maryanne of Warwick, RI, twin daughters, Marie Halton of Middletown, RI and Maureen Donovan and her husband Paul of Newport, RI, Tony Toppa of Newport, RI, Tina Doyle and her husband Jeffrey of Warwick, RI, John Toppa and his companion Jackie of Newport, RI, Joseph Toppa of Newport, RI, and James Toppa and his wife MiSuk of Portsmouth, RI; his step-children, Kelly Mitchell and her partner Jessica of Middletown, RI, Thomas Mitchell and his wife Nancy of Portsmouth, RI, Joseph Mitchell of Middletown, RI, and Susan Bucholz and her husband Brett of Portsmouth, RI; his sister, Marie Kerr of Middletown, RI; thirty-two grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.He was the brother of the late Tony Toppa and Anne Atkins, and grandfather of the late Jason Donovan. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 5, 2013 from 5-8 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 10 am in the funeral home.Burial with Military Honors will follow in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown, RI.
