Barbara Briggs

Portsmouth, RI - Barbara Briggs, 85, of 2087 East Main Road Portsmouth, a Lifelong Resident of Portsmouth, died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at John Clarke Nursing Center Middletown, RI.Born in Portsmouth, RI on December 3, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Mervin C. and Marguerite Holman Briggs. Miss. Briggs was a 1936 graduate of Rogers High School, a 1940 graduate of Providence Bible Institute which became the former Barrington College and she was also a graduate of the University of Rhode Island. She received her masters in science in 1968 from URI. She worked for 25 years as a librian in the Barrington College Library. After her retirement in 1983, she worked part time as a research librian for 7 years at the Newport Public Library. Miss. Briggs was a former member of the Portsmouth Historical Society and a member of the Portsmouth Friends Church, where she was active in church functions and activities. She is survived by a brother Ernest L. Briggs of Portsmouth, RI, several nieces and nephews and her lifelong friend Ruth Lowery of Warwick, RI.She was the sister of the late Frederick H. Briggs and Barclay M. Briggs.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at 11:00AM, in Portsmouth Evangelical Friends Church, 11 Middle Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Portsmouth Friends Churchyard in Portsmouth.Donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer?s Association, 245 Waterman Street, Suite 306, Providence, RI, 02906 or to Portsmouth Friends Church, Building Fund, 11 Middle Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
