Newport, RI - Barbara J. (Nahan) Girr, 88, of 5 Mumford Avenue, Newport, RI, died Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late James Albert Girr.Mrs. Girr was born to the late John Benedict and Theresa Bridget (Hussey) Nahan in 1923. She was born in Newport and has lived there her entire life.Mrs. Girr completed high school and went to college later on in life and took classes for sociology, religion, philosophy and history. She worked in the Newport School System as a pre-school assistant teacher and with children with special needs. She met her husband James Girr when she was fourteen at an ice skating rink. They married in February 1942 when she was eighteen. Mr. Girr worked with sheet metal for the government. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and anything to do with art as well as reading the daily paper. She always enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildrenTogether, they had four children. James A. Girr and his wife Maureen of Newport, Cheryl Mrozowski, who was Miss Rhode Island in the Miss America pageant and her husband Harry of Newport, RI, Peter F. Girr and his wife Judi of North Palm Beach, FL and Timothy D. Girr and his wife Karen of Portsmouth, RI. Mrs. Girr was the grandmother of eight, Kathryn Girr Dube, Rebecca Girr Reilly, Brett Mrozowski, Corinne Girr, Christiane Girr, Madeline Girr, Cecelia Girr and Olivia Girr.She also leaves her brothers, Joseph Nahan of Falls Church, VA, John Nahan of Washington, and her sister Isabel Harvey of Indalantic, FL, and was the sister of the late Edward Nahan.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, from 4-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Her funeral will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2012, at 9:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Josephs Church, Broadway at Mann Avenue, Newport.
