Middletown, RI - Barbara J. Lopes Sullivan, 67, of 157 Ridgewood Road, Middletown, died Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.She was the wife of George B. Sullivan. They had been married for nearly 39 years. Born in Portsmouth, RI, on January 9, 1937, she was the daughter of the late George S. and Catherine Holland Lopes.Mrs. Sullivan was a 1955 graduate of St. Catherines Academy in Newport. Before leaving the work force to raise her family, Mrs. Sullivan was employed by Manuel Brothers and Newport Electric Company. She later owned an operated Quonset Aircraft Services Inc., with her husband, serving as the company bookkeeper for 20 years. She retired in 1996 and spent winters in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She enjoyed boating onboard ?Sea Wings,? gardening, reading and was an avid bowler for many years in local leagues. Mrs. Sullivan was a member of the Newport Yacht Club and was a parishioner of St. Marys Church in Newport. Besides her husband she is survived by her son George T. Sullivan of Newport, RI, her daughter Marie Sullivan Force of Portsmouth, RI, three sisters Elizabeth ?Betty? Mello of Middletown, RI, Ann Fernandes of Tiverton, RI, and Katherine ?Kay? Butterworth of Windsor, CT, four grandchildren Isabel and Jesse Sullivan both of Newport, RI, and Emily and Jake Force both of Portsmouth, RI, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.She was the sister of the late Edward T. Lopes. Her funeral will be held on Friday, September 3, 2004, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Rhode Island Chapter, 222 Richmond Street, Suite 200, Providence, RI 02903.
