Barbara Underwood Eggeman

Barbara Underwood Eggeman, age 93, of Middletown died peacefully on Tuesday, January 7, 2014. Barbara was born January 17, 1920 in Newport, RI, the daughter of the late Louis Tilley Underwood and the late Edith Noble (Chase) Underwood. She was married to Navy Chief Robert Taylor Eggeman for 36 years until his passing in 1978.Barbara was a native Newporter and a graduate of Rogers High School Class of 1939, where she played on the girls basketball team. During War World II, she worked at the telephone company while her husband saw naval combat in the Pacific. Upon his return from the war, she began the life of a Navy wife and the family moved where her husband's Naval assignments took them, eventually settling in Middletown to be close to her parents. While raising her 3 sons, she was always involved in their activities, including volunteering as a Cub Scout Den Mother. Over the years, she also enjoyed bowling , bingo and cherished her Ladies Lunch at the Newport Creamery. She was also an avid Red Sox fan.She is survived by her sons, Richard Eggeman and his wife Sandi of Middletown, RI, Kenneth Eggeman, also of Middletown, RI, and Gary Eggeman and his wife Charlene of Portsmouth, RI, 8 grandchildren, Michael Eggeman and his wife Ellen, Stephanie Eggeman Warren, Kenneth, Chase and Christopher Eggeman, Kristin Ripa and her husband Mark, Lindsey and Nikki Eggeman as well as 5 great grandchildren, Brenden, Kaitlyn, Cameron, Cassidy and Alex. She also leaves her niece Lynn Ceglie and her husband Vin and their children Mia and Chase, her cousins Carol Ward and June Lawton and her long time dear friend Alice Pacheco.She was predeceased by her brother Lloyd Underwood.Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 10, 2014 from 4-7pm, at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 10am Memorial Funeral Home, and burial will be in Braman Cemetery.Memorial donations may be made to the Middletown Rescue Wagon Fund, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842 or to Visiting Nurse Service of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
