Lance Cpl. Barton Joseph Carroll, USMC, 18, of 333 Wapping Road Portsmouth, died Thursday, July 4, 2002 in Middletown, RI. Born in Newport, RI on Aug. 10, 1983, he was the son of Michael J. and Elizabeth Walker Carroll of Portsmouth.Barton was a 2001 graduate of Portsmouth High School where he sang in the Chorus. Following his graduation he joined the United States Marine Corps in September, he reported to Parris Island, North Carolina for Recruit Training. Upon completion he was transfered to Camp Lejeune, NC for combat training, was later assigned to the Redstone Arsenal, Alabama to be trained as an Ammunition Technician where he was the Honor Graduate of his group. He was then assigned to the 2nd Supply Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC.He was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church and had been an Altar Server for 10 years. He was a member of the Newport Rifle Club, a scuba diver and spear fisherman and a member of the US Naval Sea Cadets for five years at the Newport Naval Base. He loved his music and was an avid guitar player. Besides his parents he is survived by his paternal grandmother Evelyn C. Carroll of Middletown, RI, his maternal grandmother Dorothy M. Walker of Newport, RI, a brother Morgan J. Carroll of Portsmouth, RI, two sisters Marina J. Carroll and Lydia J. Carroll both of Portsmouth, RI, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.He was the grandson of the late Patrick F. Carroll and Robert E. Walker. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at 9:00 AM from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00AM in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial and US Marine Military Honors will be held in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Memorial donations may be made to the Lance Cpl.
