MIDDLETOWN-Bernard A. MacDonald, 92 of Allston Avenue, Middletown, R.I. passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at the Newport Hospital.He was the husband of 49 years to the late Kathryn Zeta Price MacDonald.Born in Newport, RI on August 25, 1917, he was the son of the late John Alexander and Katherine Mary Lehane MacDonald. Mac, as referred to by family, was a decorated Veteran of the 908th Air Engineering Squad of WWII and an engine and hydraulics specialist. Sergeant MacDonald was awarded the Purple Heart for rescuing his pilot from an airplane before it burst into flames but humbly refused that award.After an honorable discharge, Mac became the office manager of Middletown Volkswagon / Mazda until retirement. He then worked part time for a number of years as accountant for his nephew John Deveau of the Ships Store in Portsmouth, RI.Throughout his career years, Mac taught tennis, umpired for the Aquidneck School Little League Baseball teams, and participated in some local Casino sports broadcasting,An active member of St. Marys church in Newport, Bernie held the appointment of Captain of the Ministers of Hospitality, money counter and lector.He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Z. MacDonald, niece, Kathleen E.Deveau Langley, nephews John L. Deveau , James T. Deveau of N.J., niece Loren Burney Deveau and honorary daughters Dana M. Monteiro and the Reverend Sandra P. Michalczik of Aquidneck Island. He also leaves eight great nieces and nephews and an honorary grandson.His funeral will be held on Thursday April 29, 2010, at 8:00 a.m. from Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m. in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI.Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown, R.I.
