Bernice Gaines

Newport, RI - Bernice Tutt Gaines, 84, formerly of 3 Doris Terrace, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Albert P. Gaines, Jr. Born in Appling, GA on September 26, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Celeste Tutt.She graduated from Haines Institute in Augusta, Ga. After graduation, she moved to Newport, Rhode Island where she graduated from the Newport Secretarial School. Mrs. Gaines was retired from the Newport School Department. She was a member of the former Mt. Olivet, now Community Baptist Church, serving as Deacon and previously as Financial Secretary. Mrs. Gaines has held various positions in Queen Esther Chapter #2, OES, PHA and Rhode Island Grand Chapter OES, PHA including Past Grand Worthy Matron. Bernice is survived by her son Albert P. Gaines III, her daughter-in-law Carol Ann and grandson Alexander all of Coventry, RI. She was predeceased by her husband Albert P. Gaines Jr. and daughter Helene. She also leaves one sister Gussie M. Neal of Baltimore Md. In addition, there are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 11, 2008, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport RI.
