Newport, RI - Bessie A. Wood DeFillippo, 102, of 19 Appleby Street, Newport, RI, died Thursday, November 8, 2007 at Heatherwood Nursing and Rehabilitative Center, in Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Nicholas DeFillippo. Born in Newport, RI on November 5, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Louisa Jackson Wood of this city. She was the granddaughter of Bridget and James Wood, Jr., a Civil War veteran, who served on the USS Constitution and great granddaughter of James C. and Charlotte Slocum Wood who are buried on Glen Road in Portsmouth. She is a direct descendant of Giles Slocum who arrived in Portsmouth around 1638. She graduated from Rogers High School in 1925 and as a young girl worked in the cigar and box factories in Newport. She was a charter member of the Edward King House Senior Center and a 50 year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, William Ellery Colonel Barton Chapter of Newport.She is survived by her daughter Madelyn and son-in-law John Moy of Portsmouth. She leaves three grandchildren, Lisa Berard and her husband Clancey of Newport, Jeff Moy and his wife Janet of Middletown and Chris Moy and his wife Lisa of Little Compton and also four great-grandchildren, Rachel Berard, John Moy, Patrick Moy, and Madison Moy. She was the mother of the late Theresa DeFillippo and sister to the late Everett Wood and Christina Hinton. Her funeral will be private.
