Portsmouth, RI - Beverly Ann Tavares, 68, of Portsmouth, died Monday, September 15, 2014, at St. Elizabeths Manor in Bristol, RI. Born in Fall River, MA on January 25, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Antone and Mary (Lopes) Tavares. Beverly received a Master's Degree in Education and worked as a teacher for over 34 years in the Portsmouth School System. She spent most of her career as an 8th grade Social Studies teacher at the Portsmouth Middle School, retiring in 2001. After her retirement from teaching she worked for the Preservation Society of Newport County. She is survived by her sister Ann Marie Palma and her husband Ralph of Bristol, RI, her nephews LT. Col. Matthew J. Palma, USMC, and his wife Lisa of South Kingstown, RI, John N. Palma and his wife Bethany of Cranston, RI, and her great nephews Justin, Kyle, Jacob, Brendan and J.J.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at 12:00pm, in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home Hospice Care of Rhode Island, 169 George Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860, or Women and Infant's Hospital, Oncology Department, 101 Dudley Street, Providence, RI 02905, or a charity of your choice.
