MIDDLETOWN, RI - Billie A. Stevens Sr., 77, of 711 Forest Park, Middletown, RI, formerly of Colony Drive, Middletown, RI, died Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol, RI. Born in Orgas, West Virginia, on July 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Shirley and Alice Woodrum Stevens.Mr. Stevens was a twenty year Veteran of the US Army, serving during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era, retiring in 1970 as a Sargeant. He had been the recipient of the Purple Heart, the National Defense Medal, and the VSM. Upon his retirement he went to work for the Newport and Middletown Post Offices as a letter carrier, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of Newport a life member of the Middletown VFW Post #4487, and the National Letter Carriers Association. Mr. Stevens was an avid gardener. He is survived by three sons, Billie A. Stevens Jr. of Killingly, CT, Ronald W. Stevens of North Kingstown, RI, and James J. Stevens of Tiverton, RI, two daughters Betsy Faulds of Tiverton, RI, and Deborah Rand of Marlborough, CT, a brother Roy Stevens of Oak Hill, WV, a sister Bethel Stevens of Michigan, fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a caregiver Anthony Vieira of Tiverton. He was also the brother of the late Raymond Stevens who died in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day.Funeral services and burial will be private.
