Bryan Daniel Cooney, passed away at home in Middletown, R.I., surrounded by family and friends. Born November 10, 1942 at Newport Hospital, he was the son of the late Bryan L. Cooney and Jane Crowther Cooney. He graduated from Rogers High School and Providence College, and then began his career at Rogers High School before serving three years in the U.S Army, in Germany. Upon his return to Newport, he married Jean Elizabeth O`Hanley, and together they ran O`Hanley`s gift store on Bowen`s Wharf. He continued teaching at his alma mater, where he especially enjoyed his psychology students, and served as the senior class advisor. He directed senior class plays for many years, including one of his favorites, Fiddler on the Roof. Bryan was himself an entertainer at heart, one who commanded a classroom or an audience of friends with his gift of storytelling and his booming laughter. His wives, Jean O`Hanley Cooney and Jean Brady Cooney, pre-deceased him before he retired to Sarasota, Fla., where he volunteered as a counselor at the Resurrection House. Throughout his life he was generous and compassionate, providing to those in need or sheltering wayward souls in his own home.
