Middletown, RI - C. Henry Gilmore, Jr., 74, of 17 Squantum Drive, Middletown, RI, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Madeline Gail Sullivan Gilmore. Born in Newport, RI on November 19, 1937, he was the son of the late Clarence Henry and Josephine Reigle Gilmore.Mr. Gilmore was a 1956 graduate of Rogers High School. After his graduation he served eight years in the R.I. Army National Guard, receiving an honorable discharge. In 1965 he was elected as Tax Assessor for the Town of Middletown until 1969. He began his banking career in 1959 at Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank starting as a teller, working as a consumer loan interviewer, a collection department mortgage interviewer and branch head teller. In 1964 he became the Assistant Manager of the Middletown Branch Office and in 1967 he transferred to the Head Office Mortgage Department as operations supervisor. In 1971 he was elected Mortgage Officer and became Manager of the service area, in 1976 he was elected Assistant Vice President with the Mortgage Lending. He ended his career at the bank in 1983 as Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager of the Washington Square Office. Later that year he started his second career in the financial services industries with John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company as a marketing representative until 1993 and retired from Prudential Insurance Co. in 2003. During his retirement years, he held multiple part time jobs throughout Middletown, the last being with Barrys Automotive of Newport, but his favorite pastime was spending time with his family, friends and neighbors. Henry served on the Town of Middletown in many capacities. He was on the Middletown Tax Appeals Board for three years, a member of the Middletown Fraternal Order of Police Association, Lodge 21 where he served as president for two years and secretary for 16 years. He was also a town special police officer and Town Sergeant and Sealer of Weights and Measure for the Town of Middletown. He served as the chairman for the Board of Canvasses in 1991.He was a past member of the Aquidneck Island Police Parade Committee and was a program supervisor at the armed services YMCA in Newport. Besides his wife of 49 years Henry leaves his two sons Wayne and his companion Woon of Ledyard, CT, and Doug and his wife Liz of Middletown, RI, and his four grandchildren, Connor, Haydon, Ryan and Isabella Gilmore. Henry also leaves his extended family, Joyce and Jerry Riley of Dover, NH and Ronnie Bulk of Middletown, along with many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 9, 2012, from 4-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at 11:00am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
